p7584
Kuroshuton
This is a newly fired black sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and is currently pursuing his craft in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.

This is his latest work, fired in February 2025.

Through Master Oiwa’s intense firing process, the black slip has achieved a vivid coloration, resulting in a lustrous, clear black that mirrors the signature black of his mentor, Ryuichi Kakurezaki.

Master Oiwa prioritizes the firing duration in the high-temperature range toward the end of the process, and by firing at peak temperatures for a relatively long period, he creates a brilliant blue *yohen* (kiln transformation).

A beautiful cobalt blue spreads across the entire outer perimeter of the piece, excluding the front, the foot, and the interior, and it will surely shimmer even more beautifully when holding sake.

The black slip on the foot and the interior has also been fired thoroughly, transforming into a glossy black that looks as if it were perpetually wet.

The form, which incorporates and expresses his mentor’s unique design sensibilities, is fascinating, and one cannot help but be captivated by the way the foot is carved as if sliced into the clay with a spatula.

Signed wooden box to follow (we kindly ask for your patience as it will take some time before shipping).
Diameter 7.2cm x 7.1cm x Height 6.2cm

Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014 to work independently.
