p7602
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a previous work of Bizen sake cup by Tomio Ochi, who worked silently and diligently at the kiln under the tutelage of Anjin Abe, pouring his unfulfilled aspirations into his pottery.

True to Ochi-sensei’s preference for firing at high temperatures, this is a profound piece that has been fired until it is rock-hard and solid, exuding a sense of power as if the clay itself has been condensed into a high density.

The surface is a rich brown that could be mistaken for Ibe-de at first glance, and the iron-black skin shimmers with an eerie, glossy luster.

The front features sesame-seed-like ash glaze (goma) that appears as if it were sprayed on like water droplets, which I believe masterfully inherits not only the color but also the style of Edo-period goma glaze.

The square-shaped form, which is perfect for elegantly showcasing the goma, is also intriguing; the clay, the firing, and the craftsmanship work in trinity to guide this "Ochi Bizen" to perfection.

This is an unused item that has been carefully stored since its purchase as new.

Original signed box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.1cm x 7.0cm x Height 5.7cm

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

From 1969, while working at a company, he studied painting and sculpture at Taka Bijutsu.

In 1976, he received instruction while serving as an assistant for kiln firing under Anjin Abe in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the premises of Anjin Abe's studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He approaches Bizen pottery making by leveraging the experience he gained studying sculpture and painting.
