p7706
Karatsu ash-glazed sake pitcher
This is a freshly fired Karatsu ash-glazed sake bottle by Yuho Kaneshige, an artist who, while belonging to the Kaneshige lineage, constantly questions his own work and continues to create as an individual potter.

This latest work was fired in May 2025 and was featured in his solo exhibition held in Tokyo.

Using clay that Mr. Kaneshige himself excavated in the Karatsu region during the mid-Heisei period, this Karatsu-ware sake vessel represents the culmination of his glazed pottery work.

The bottle makes excellent use of the deep, rich qualities of the Karatsu red clay, which is the true essence of the style. Faint red mottling appears throughout, giving it an appearance somewhat reminiscent of a gohonde tea bowl. True to its title, "Karatsu Clay, Ash Glaze," it reflects a captivating aesthetic cultivated through his experience in making tea ceramics, unrestricted by conventional theories.

The glaze is exceptionally simple, featuring no iron underglaze and consisting solely of a gray ash glaze. However, subtle variations during the wood-firing process and the black specks erupted from the clay’s components combine to create a deeply flavorful effect.

The finger marks around the waist are alluring and intriguing, but the way the glaze drips from the rim like a mountain path is truly magnificent. Combined with the form—which does not fully stretch out due to the nature of the Karatsu clay—the piece allows one to fully enjoy the refined charm of Karatsu ware.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Rim 3.8cm x Body diameter 8.8cm x 8.4cm x Height 12.2cm. Capacity 250cc.

Yuho Kaneshige was born as the third son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige.

In 1975, he began studying pottery techniques under his father, Sozan Kaneshige.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

Currently, he primarily produces tableware with a focus on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases.

In his tea bowls—his preferred form—he places importance on the interior design (mikomi), pursuing a balance between comfort of use and the exterior aesthetic.

He has received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Prize at the Chanoyu Modeling Exhibition, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Prize, among others.

In 2002, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and in 2018, the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award.

In 2019, he was designated as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture.

He is also highly dedicated to his solo exhibitions, which are held at various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
