p7789
Bizen white sake cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki is a potter who brings a fresh breeze to the world of Bizen ware through his exceptional sense of style and masterful sculpting ability. This is a slightly earlier work of his: a Bizen white sake cup.
The piece was fired in November 2023.
While utilizing the natural characteristics of Bizen earth, he skillfully incorporates elements from his roots—such as wood carving—to create a unique piece that is instantly recognizable as his own.
Without using any glazes or clay slips, he fires a special white clay from Ibe to produce an appearance unlike anything seen before.
It looks as though a thin, transparent glaze has been applied over the entire piece, which alone reveals the unique reaction of this white clay to the ash (goma), allowing one to understand the profound appeal of the white clay that has captivated Koichiro.
Despite using standard fuel for this firing, the ash has turned pure white, creating a matte texture and creamy hue that, in a good way, diverges from conventional Bizen ware in a truly surprising fashion.
The piece was formed by tearing a block of clay in two, overlapping the pieces, and shaping it by hand; the tear marks remain as a dynamic, rock-like landscape that exudes immense power.
This is an unused piece that has been kept at our shop since it was taken out of the kiln.

Signed wooden box (tomobako) included (four-way batten style)
Diameter 8.5cm x 8.3cm x Height 5.7cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1974, the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.
After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.
In 1998, he began studying under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City and a former apprentice to his father.
After two years of studying ceramics, he returned to Japan and, in 2000, began his career as an independent potter under his father, Jun Isezaki.
