p7808
Sake cup
This is a sake cup by Seishi Mori, an artist who named his kiln "Shakuyo" (Scorching Sun) and created his works as if imbuing the clay with prayers, serving as an antithesis to a consumerist society.
True to the name Shakuyo, the piece features the rich scarlet color characteristic of Mori, who poured his heart and soul into capturing that life-burning hue, appearing as if the brilliant glow of the kiln fire has yet to cool.

The secret lies in the *hi-dasuki* (fire-cord) technique and long-duration, high-temperature firing; the vaporized straw components coat the entire piece, forming the viscous, oil-painting-like scarlet color unique to Mori’s work.

The form is also distinctively identifiable as Mori’s work at a glance. While one might initially mistake the pattern for regular lines resembling bamboo nodes, the random lines stretching diagonally create an aura of chaos.

In a modern society where ideals and philosophies are quickly consumed as mere symbols, this is an energetic sake cup into which the artist poured all of his prayers, wishes, and anger into the clay.

Signed wooden box (shiho-zan style)
Diameter 6.1cm x 5.9cm x Height 6.2cm

*The original ceramic biography and signed cloth are not included (we will include a plain cloth from our shop).

Seishi Mori was born in 1944 into the Mori family, one of the six traditional Bizen kiln master families.

After graduating from university, he entered the world of pottery in 1969, studying under his father, Chikuzan Mori, and his older brother, Tozan Mori.

In 1975, he built a semi-underground anagama kiln and became independent, subsequently holding solo exhibitions across the country.

He passed away in 2011.
