p7838
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in September of Reiwa 7 (2025).

True to Koriki's style of drawing out the character of the clay through bold, risk-taking kiln firings, the exterior features a deep, black ash-covered yohen reminiscent of wet charcoal, with some areas showing a subtle, shimmering silver ash-covered yohen.

While the scarlet hue of the Kaneshige school generally tends to lighten toward white with intense firing, this piece was fired at the perfect moment in a very limited area, succeeding in retaining a rich scarlet color despite the intense heat.

The interior basin showcases a clash between the ink-black of the ash-covered yohen and the scarlet hue of the clay, combined with a small, circular "marunuke" (clear spot) that resembles a full moon reflecting on water, creating a magnificent landscape.

This piece features a design that combines a powerful double foot ring with twin lattice patterns, but the aforementioned earthy quality skillfully softens the intensity of the deliberate design, resulting in a well-balanced work.

Signed wooden box (Shihozan) included
Diameter 7.1cm x 7.0cm x Height 5.7cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige for seven years starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to establish himself as an independent artist, and he fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
