p7869
Bizen Hidasuki Oversized Sake Cup
While studying under both Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige, Yoshiteru Koriki has continued to pursue his own creative path without pretension. This is a brand new, oversized Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln.

This latest work was pulled from the kiln in September of Reiwa 7 (2025).

A complete departure from his previous style, the form is so strangely relaxed and otherworldly—almost like a child’s clay creation—that it made time stand still the moment I laid eyes on it.

Although the clay used for this large cup is relatively coarse mountain soil, I was surprised to find that, despite its considerable thickness, it is lighter than standard cups made from rice-field clay.

The rim is left entirely raw, without any shaping, reflecting a boldness that discards all artifice, down to the foot, where the thick base is pressed into the body of the vessel.

While technically classified as "hidasuki" (fire-cord) firing, and though straw marks are visible across the piece, the clay surface has completely absorbed the straw, making them appear like "fossilized straw."

This piece was born from a state of total mental emptiness, simply playing with the clay; it is as if, like the Fool in the Tarot, it suggests the beginning of a new journey.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)

Diameter 8.3cm x 8.0cm x Height 4.3cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he spent seven years from 1989 studying pottery under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
