p7888
Bizen Free Cup
These new Bizen free cups are the work of Yoshiteru Kouriki, who continues to pursue his own creative style without pretense, despite having apprenticed under masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
These are the very latest works, freshly removed from the kiln in September of Reiwa 7 (2025).

Fired slowly in the middle section of a climbing kiln, these pieces do not feature the bold, flashy natural glaze effects often seen in Bizen ware, but instead allow you to enjoy the original, earthy tones of the clay.

Formed from a blend of high-quality rice-field soil and mountain clay, the pieces may appear to be a single shade of brown at first glance, but display a subtle variety of hues across their surfaces.

While sold as "free cups," they are sized between a small tea bowl (kohuku-chawan) and a standard teacup (yunomi). They are wonderful, versatile pieces that can be enjoyed in many ways—simply as a large teacup, as a glass for shochu on the rocks, or as a small bowl for whisking matcha.

With daily use, the high-quality clay surface will become polished, acquiring a deep, weathered texture that will only grow more beautiful over time.

No box included
Diameter 9.0cm x 8.8cm x Height 9.1cm

Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition for the first time.
