p7939
Bizen Hikidashiguro Sake Cup
This is a newly kiln-fired Bizen-yaki Hikidashi-guro (pulled-black) sake cup by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, who continues to lead the Bizen pottery world with his inexhaustible creativity.
This latest work was removed from the kiln in February 2026.

Created using the "pulling" technique that represents the Isezaki school, this extremely rare Hikidashi-guro sake cup is one of only a few that can be produced in a single firing by being placed near the kiln's firing port and removed while the kiln is at nearly 1200 degrees Celsius.

The "goma" (ash glaze) has taken on an amber hue mixed with blue due to the pulling process, resulting in a beautiful, translucent kiln-transmutation that can only be seen in pulled works.

The black surface has also become a deep, clear blue due to the effect of cobalt in the slip, and it will surely sparkle even more beautifully when moistened during use.

While most Bizen-yaki works evoke intense flames and hot winds, Hikidashi-guro has a very different, delicate expression, evoking the gentle scenery of falling rain.

With its smooth black coloration in the clay-bodied areas and an impressively large, energetic form, the finish is characteristic of Isezaki Sensei, extending beyond just the yellow goma and blue kiln-transmutation.
Signed wooden box to be provided later (please note that it will take over one month for shipping).
Diameter 7.7cm x 7.4cm x Height 6.4cm
Jun Isezaki (1936–2026, born in Inbe, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture) was the second son of Bizen-yaki artist Yozan Isezaki, who specialized in ceramic handicrafts.

He learned pottery techniques from his father from a young age and began his career in earnest after graduating from the Okayama University Faculty of Education's Special Art Course in 1959.

In 1962, he and his brother, Mitsuru Isezaki, successfully restored and fired a medieval-style semi-underground anagama kiln.

In addition to traditional vessels such as flower vases, plates, and tea ceramics, he worked extensively on works that emphasize form, such as ceramic walls, reliefs, and objects.

He prioritized both shaping and firing in his creative process, establishing a unique style brimming with a contemporary sensibility that utilized the characteristics of anagama, noborigama (climbing), and electric kilns.

As a leading artist in the creation of Bizen-yaki ceramic walls and reliefs, he produced numerous works for public facilities.

He became a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association in 1966 and served as a lecturer at the Okayama University Faculty of Education's Special Art Course from 1978 to 1987.

In 1998, he and his brother Mitsuru Isezaki were designated as holders of Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and in the same year, he was appointed as a director of the Japan Kōgei Association and Secretary General of its Chugoku Branch.

In 2002, he created a ceramic wall for the new Prime Minister's Official Residence.

In 2004, he was recognized as the fifth artist to be designated a holder of a Nationally Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property for Bizen-yaki.

In 2025, he was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit.

He passed away in 2026.
Major awards and honors include the Toyo Kaneshige Award, the Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition Excellence Award, the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award, the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award, the Okayama Prefecture Miki Memorial Award, the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Award, and designation as a Person of Cultural Merit.
