p7990
Bizen Sake Cup
Born into the Kaneshige Ritoen, one of the six prestigious Bizen kiln families, Mitsuhiro Kaneshige creates pottery driven solely by his own curiosity, rather than being bound by his renowned name. This sake cup is a testament to his approach.
By combining electric and wood-fired kiln techniques under various firing conditions, he has captured the unique texture and "matière" of the ancient ceramics he so admires.

This sake cup features a profound texture achieved through multiple firings and a rich "yellow sesame" (ki-goma) glaze, masterfully recreating the chocolate-like clay quality characteristic of antique Bizen ware.

The control of the kiln effects—a hallmark of his multi-firing process—is superb, resulting in a visually captivating piece with accents of greenish yellow sesame and sophisticated "thread sesame" (ito-goma) patterns.

The body, gently shaped into a subtle triangular form, is incredibly comfortable to hold, making it surprisingly easy to use despite its substantial appearance.

The thoughtful potter’s wheel marks in the well, reminiscent of a tea bowl's "tea pool," and the base, trimmed with intricate "crepe-like" wrinkles, are perfectly executed.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time for dispatch).
Diameter 7.6cm x 7.5cm x Height 4.5cm

Mitsuhiro Kaneshige was born in 1988 at the Kaneshige Ritoen kiln in Inbe, Bizen City.

In 2017, he entered the Bizen Pottery Center, and in 2020, he fired his first kiln.

He received the Shubi Award at the 2023 Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition and held his first solo exhibition in 2024.
