p8137
Bizen Nerikomi Cup Black
This is a new Bizen nerikomi (kneaded clay) cup in black by Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and aims to create works that suit modern life.

For this work, mountain clay is used as the base and molded without being fully blended. Taking a step beyond the natural nerikomi technique inherited from his mentor, he has created a unique hue resembling rusted iron, which he calls "black nerikomi."

Molding clay without uniform blending can easily lead to cracking due to the uneven composition; however, by striking and compacting the clay itself while shaping it into a three-dimensional form, he has finished it as a cup with a beautiful silhouette.

Furthermore, the complex polyhedral form created using a plaster mold pairs well with this black nerikomi, accentuating the beauty of the silhouette as a three-dimensional object while reflecting light from different angles.

In contrast to the ironware-like exterior, the interior reveals a clearer marbled pattern from the nerikomi technique. Since the piece is formed by stacking clay in a tube-like fashion, the layers of clay appear to rotate like a tornado.

No box included
Diameter 8.4cm × 8.1cm × Height 10.0cm

Koji Nakahara was born in Osaka Prefecture in 1978.

He graduated from the advanced course at Nara College of Arts in 2000.

Subsequently, in 2001, he graduated from the Bizen Pottery Center in Bizen City.

In the same year, he began his apprenticeship under Fumio Kawabata, and in 2007, he joined the Kaneshige Ritoen kiln.

He built his own kiln in Osaka City and became an independent artist in 2010.

Since then, he has actively exhibited his work at the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition and various public exhibitions.

He is currently a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association.
