p8143
Bizen Nerikomi Cup
This is a new Bizen nerikomi cup by Koji Nakahara, who studied under Fumio Kawabata and aims to create pieces that suit modern lifestyles.

The cup features a marble-like, mottled clay surface created by mixing together over a dozen varieties of local clay and firing it to stoneware hardness.

When clay is shaped without being mixed evenly, its uneven composition can make it prone to cracking; however, by striking and compacting the clay as it is formed into a three-dimensional shape, Nakahara creates a cup with a beautiful silhouette.

Because the clay is built up layer by layer, it is possible to create complex designs that are difficult to achieve on a potter’s wheel. The center of this piece’s body is accordion-like, looking as though it might stretch when pulled.

The exterior is almost entirely covered in red-orange flame marks, while the yellow sesame-seed glaze applied to the rim provides an exquisite accent. The clay surface, design, texture, and firing are all executed to a high standard, making this a wonderful cup.

No box
Diameter 8.3 cm × 7.8 cm × Height 8.7 cm

Koji Nakahara was born in Osaka Prefecture in 1978.

He graduated from the Advanced Course at Nara College of Art in 2000.

In 2001, he graduated from the Bizen Ceramic Center in Bizen City.

That same year, he studied under Fumio Kawabata, and in 2007, he joined Kanashige Toshien.

In 2010, he built a kiln in Osaka City and became independent.

Since then, he has actively exhibited his work at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and various open exhibitions across the country.

He is currently a full member of the Japan Association of Craftsmen.
