Today's update features a Bizen sake cup by Junpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige, the leading figure of the Kaneshige family.
This is a new work fired together in Kosuke Kaneshige’s kiln last autumn.
The piece is an exceptional work, distinguished above all by its excellent balance of kiln-change effects and hi-iro (scarlet) coloring,
with a clearly defined boundary against the ash-covered area known as kumadori.
The scarlet color, which carries a sense of elegance backed by the quality of the clay, is also wonderful,
and its exquisite shade—neither too red nor too pale—makes it ideal for a sake cup.
A line is carved diagonally like a monk’s surplice (kesa-gake) from the rim of the front,
making it a unique piece meant to be enjoyed from an angle other than the traditional front, unlike the brush-washer style cups.
The ash-covered texture, with a subtle resistance like worn-down sandpaper,
will be slowly smoothed out over time by the sake and your palm as you use it,
gaining character in much the same way as vintage jeans.
The interior base reveals a vibrant, clear orange clay body,
a delightful touch that beautifully highlights the sake.
