安倍安人 作 備前湯呑 筒茶碗ニモ(Limited edition)

Bizen Yunomi by Yasuhito Abe, can also be used as a Tsutsu Chawan (Limited edition)

We are pleased to introduce the latest work by Anjin Abe: a Bizen tea cup that can also serve as a cylinder tea bowl (tsutsu-chawan).
This is a limited edition piece, specially commissioned by our gallery.
While designed as a tea cup, its exceptionally luxurious specifications allow it to also function as a cylinder tea bowl.
The exquisite quality of the clay—which appears as if it has melted into itself—is unparalleled, and the profound yellow sesame (ki-goma) glaze, featuring crackling in various places, is a supreme texture that could only be achieved by Anjin Abe.
Inside the bowl, layers upon layers of smooth, vibrant yellow sesame glaze surge forth.

I believe that is enough regarding the firing process.
As this is a work by Anjin Abe, it features a magnificent finish that needs no explanation.
In truth, what drew me in was the form.
The base has a rounded, cylindrical shape, but as it reaches the rim, it transitions into a gentle square.
On these flat, square surfaces, the profound yellow sesame glaze mentioned earlier is generously applied.
To balance this, a lattice (higaki) pattern is adorned around the waist.
In other words, just like his previous works, this piece employs a thorough pictorial composition, meaning there is a "structure" and a "story" behind it rather than it being fired haphazardly.
Simply writing "also for use as a cylinder tea bowl" on the box lid does not mean it can truly be used as one.
I believe it is because this is a tea cup with structure and narrative that it can transcend its boundaries and be elevated to a tea bowl.
I feel I have caught a glimpse of Anjin Abe's message in this very structure.
