Hello everyone, how are you all doing?
Starting today, we are holding a special New Year's exhibition on our blog featuring vessels by the great masters.
We will be introducing wonderful vessels created by masters ranging from Living National Treasures to holders of Intangible Cultural Property.
The first installment today is a Bizen square plate by Toyo Kaneshige.
This piece is thought to date from around 1955, a little before his final years.
As is common with the works of Toyo Kaneshige, the pieces do not demand, "Look at this!"
Yet, at a glance, they possess a beauty that instantly makes you realize, "This is a work by Toyo Kaneshige."
The quality of the sesame-seed ash glaze (goma) itself, the fineness of the grains, and how it is distributed across the entire piece.
The extremely meticulous finish felt in every detail, and the deliberate distortion to prevent the form from appearing too rigid.
The refined, elegant clay quality and the stone inclusions that evoke a sense of transient, weathered beauty.
The grace born of high technical skill and mindset, and the profound wabi-sabi of the clay texture, are blended into one.
By integrating grace and wabi-sabi, the piece cancels out any unnecessary presence or assertion, creating a modest and elegant Kaneshige Bizen through a wonderful sense of balance.

The crisp, clean look of the sesame-seed glaze enhances the ingredients placed upon it.

Its slightly distorted form introduces a touch of whimsy into the meticulous craftsmanship, creating a unique rhythm.
