Today, one of our regular customers who practices pottery visited us and showed us some rare pieces of their work.
This is a tea bowl with a natural black finish, fired in their own home kiln without the use of any slip.
They explained that there is an underground water vein near the kiln, which creates the moisture that results in these beautiful gold-like hues and natural black finishes.

With some parts shining with the luster of carbonized silver, it has been fired into a black finish with many highlights.
Since it was achieved naturally without any application of slip, they said they were very surprised when they opened the kiln.
I was once again taught about the fascination and depth of Bizen ware, and its almost magical, infinite capacity for transformation.
They mentioned they will be participating in a group exhibition in Soja City, Okayama Prefecture from August 20th to 26th,
so please be sure to stop by if you are visiting Okayama.
