Hello everyone, how are you all doing?
We have received new work by Junpei Kaneshige, which we previously announced on Facebook.
I would like to introduce these excellent pieces on our blog now that they have been carefully prepared.
For our first feature, I would like to introduce a sake vessel with magnificent "kase-yohen" (matte kiln-fired transformation), a hallmark of the Kato kiln.
The fine-textured dark green matte "goma" (sesame glaze) and the black-silver ash coating create a weathered, seasoned aesthetic.
Combined with the vibrant, bright red "hiiro" (scarlet) characteristic of kase-yohen, the piece achieves a look that is both elegant and sophisticated.
Furthermore, the quality of the clay surface and the firing itself, typical of the Kaneshige family, is superb;
because these are sake vessels meant to be held in the palm of your hand, they have been meticulously finished.
The scarlet color, which seems to glow from within, has an irresistible appeal for sake lovers.

The superb scarlet hue is like finding the finest pulp after peeling back a hard skin.

The supple form, characteristic of Kaneshige-sensei’s work, is also stunning.

The black-silver sections reveal a scarlet base, creating a unique, magma-like atmosphere.

The matte "goma" glaze, which appears to cling to the surface, will change in character with continued use.

The overall shape is a gentle rhombus, giving it a tall, smart impression.

The matte "goma" glaze covers even the base (kodai), showing the true mastery of the Kato kiln.
