金重素山 作 備前耳付甕

Bizen Jar with Handles by Sozan Kaneshige

It snowed a little in Bizen today, making for a very cold day. Please take care, as a strong cold wave is expected to continue from tomorrow onwards.

Now, today I would like to introduce a fascinating piece by Sozan Kaneshige. It is a mizuya-game (water jar) that showcases the powerful wheel work of Sozan-sensei. It features a grand, pleasantly taut body, paired with a gentle rim that complements that strength. Overall, it is a piece with exceptional balance.

The simple, straightforward expression—without any unnecessary indentation or distortion—truly resonates. Even the lugs have a somewhat playful quality, resulting in a finish that warms the heart. It feels tense, yet includes areas of genuine relaxation; I believe this is the true essence of Sozan-sensei's work.

While the piece is primarily sangiri (reduction firing), the rim is beautifully adorned with gold coloring that looks like a rainbow. I believe this is the perfect level of firing to fully enjoy the rich, clay-like texture for which Kaneshige is known. It almost feels a shame to hide it under too much goma (ash glaze).

The fusion of the beautiful clay texture mentioned above and the exquisite form makes this a truly luxurious and magnificent piece. Usually, large pieces of this size make one want to display them prominently, but this work has a bewitching charm that makes you want to enjoy it secretly and quietly. Much like a sake cup featuring a superb kiln transformation (yohen), it is a truly mysterious and wonderful work that you will want to take your time to enjoy in private.

size: Body diameter 32.3cm × 32.1cm × Height 23.3cm (Box signed by Yuho)
