Description

This is an earlier work of Bizen sake cup by Makoto Kaneshige, the eldest son of the master craftsman Sozan Kaneshige, whose work charms many people with its harmony of delicate, elegant clay texture and powerful form. The piece features the unique, slightly bluish "kase-goma" (dry sesame glaze) that is characteristic of Makoto-sensei, making it a delight to view from every angle. Along with the slightly yellowish hue of the clay where the glaze has pulled away, the cup is sure to develop even more character as it is used over time. The sharp, crisp form possesses a sense of elegance within its strength, a charm that draws the viewer in. Original signed wooden box (shiho-zan) included.
Diameter 7.2cm x Diameter 6.6cm x Height 5.8cm Makoto Kaneshige is the eldest son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder, Sozan Kaneshige. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University, he began his path in ceramics under his father in 1969, becoming independent in 1979. He primarily focuses on tea ceremony ceramics thrown on the potter's wheel, characterized by deep, rich firing. He strives to eliminate excess decoration, focusing on pouring his very soul directly into the clay. He rarely enters public exhibitions, preferring to focus his creative energy on solo exhibitions, which he holds energetically every year at department stores and other venues in Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany, and in 1997, he exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition.
