Description
This is a new Bizen "haikaburi" (ash-covered) sake cup by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing, and form. The piece is beautifully divided into three layers of goma (sesame glaze), koge (scorched areas), and tsuchi-aji (natural clay character), allowing one to enjoy tracing the flow of the thickly applied ash. The interior (mikomi) features a rich chocolate-brown clay texture; when sake is swirled within, the deep character of the clay is sure to impart an even mellower flavor. The quiet design—marked by the well-placed indentations on the foot, rim, and body characteristic of Morimoto’s work—further emphasizes the "dynamic" movement of the ash and flame flows.
