Description
This Bizen sake cup is by Masao Akitani, who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates works brimming with original character amidst a modern sensibility. While Mr. Akitani is known for his elaborate designs, this is a remarkably simple and generously sized piece—a rarity for him. It was formed using a sandy clay, after which the surface was lightly tapped with a stone to create the fine, textured finish known as *ishime-hada*. The dry quality of the clay combined with a light yellow *goma* (sesame ash glaze) and the stone-textured surface gives this piece a dry, minimalist aesthetic that offers a unique take on traditional Bizen ware.
