Description
This is an Bizen sake cup by Tomio Ochi, an artist who works diligently at his kiln under the guidance of Yasuhito Abe, channeling his unfulfilled aspirations into his ceramics. The piece is finished with a coating of iron-rich clay and fired at a higher temperature than usual, resulting in a rich, viscous black hue. Layers of deep dark brown and black are complemented by well-melted yellow sesame ash, creating a profound and textured landscape. The surface, formed by these overlapping colors, takes on an even more beautiful expression when moistened, delighting its owner.
Signed wooden box to be provided at a later date (please allow some time for delivery).
Diameter 7.0cm × Diameter 6.9cm × Height 5.8cm Tomio Ochi graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School in 1949. In 1952, he moved to Tokyo to study oil painting and sculpture. While working as a company employee, he continued to pursue painting and sculpture. In 1997, he visited Yasuhito Abe in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, to seek his mentorship. He built his own kiln in Ushimado in 1998, and has since been dedicated to the craft of Bizen ware, drawing upon his background in sculpture and painting.
