Description

This Bizen black *nerikomi* (kneaded clay) *guinomi* (sake cup) is the work of Naoki Yokoyama, an artist captivated by the myriad expressions of Bizen ware. Unlike the traditional *nerikomi* technique using oxidation firing, this black *nerikomi* piece was achieved through reduction firing by introducing charcoal. The dark gray surface, which leans more toward the blue Bizen technique than true black, is complemented by a beautifully shimmering, gold-tinged *hidasuki* (fire cord) pattern, exuding a truly magnificent beauty. The marble-like variation in the clay's texture—a hallmark of Yokoyama's dedication to the material—is both mysterious and fascinating. Signed wooden box (double-slat lid)
Diameter 6.5cm × Diameter 6.4cm × Height 6.2cm Naoki Yokoyama is the second son of Shusui Yokoyama. Inspired by the mystique of ceramics, he entered the Bizen Pottery Center after graduating from high school in 1991. The following year, he began a four-year apprenticeship under Fumio Kawabata, eventually establishing his own studio in 1996. He built his own climbing kiln in 2000. Utilizing the natural *nerikomi* technique learned from his mentor, he creates vases, tea utensils, and sake ware. He received the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition Incentive Award in 1999 and 2000, and has had his works selected multiple times for the Tea Ceremony Exhibition and the Japan Traditional Crafts Branch Exhibition. He held a solo exhibition at a department store in Okayama in 2003.
