Description

This Bizen sake cup is by Jumpei Kaneshige, the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige, the leading figure of the Kaneshige family. It features a finish known as "kase yohen," a rare and highly prized firing style within the Kaneshige tradition. It combines a "kase goma" (matte ash glaze) resulting from a slightly lower firing temperature with a scarlet clay body, accented by dark "koge goma" kiln-change patterns. Its slightly compact and understated form avoids being overly assertive, allowing one to focus on the meticulous firing and the magnificent texture of the clay. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.6cm x Diameter 6.3cm x Height 4.6cm Jumpei Kaneshige was born in Komaba, Tokyo, in 1972, as the eldest son of Kosuke Kaneshige. He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Waseda University in 1994. In 2000, he completed his graduate studies in sculpture at Long Island University in New York, USA, and upon returning to Japan, he apprenticed under his father, Kosuke Kaneshige.
