Description

This is an Ibe teacup by Tomio Ochi, who works silently at the kiln under the tutelage of Yasuhito Abe, pouring his unfulfilled aspirations into his ceramics. The vessel is coated in iron-rich clay and fired at a higher temperature than usual, resulting in a rich, viscous black hue. Created slowly by hand-coiling, the piece reveals the extremely high density of the clay particles when held and examined. A light dusting of sesame-seed ash dances across this profound surface, its fine texture resembling powdery snow. Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipping)
Diameter 8.1cm × Diameter 8.0cm × Height 9.8cm Tomio Ochi graduated from Niihama Technical High School in Ehime Prefecture in 1949. He moved to Tokyo in 1952 to study oil painting and sculpture. Thereafter, he pursued painting and sculpture while working a corporate job. In 1997, he visited Yasuhito Abe in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, to receive his guidance. He built his own kiln in Ushimado in 1998, and has since been crafting Bizen ware, drawing upon his experience in sculpture and painting.
