Description

This Ibe tea cup is by Tomio Ochi, an artist who diligently worked at the kiln under the tutelage of Yasuhito Abe, pouring his unfulfilled aspirations into his ceramics. The vessel is coated with iron-rich clay and fired at a higher temperature than usual, resulting in a rich, viscous black hue. Created slowly and carefully by hand-pinching, the piece reveals its high-density clay particles upon touch and inspection. Dancing across this profound surface is a light dusting of "goma" (sesame ash glaze), which, due to the fineness of the particles, resembles powdery snow. Diameter 8.3cm × Diameter 8.2cm × Height 9.9cm Tomio Ochi graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School in 1949. He moved to Tokyo in 1952 to study oil painting and sculpture. Thereafter, while working for a company, he continued to pursue painting and sculpture. In 1997, he visited Yasuhito Abe in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, to receive his guidance. He built his own kiln in Ushimado in 1998, and has since been dedicated to Bizen ware, leveraging the experience he gained from his studies in sculpture and painting.
