Description

This is a Bizen hidaski (fire-cord) horse-riding cup by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, a live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. Inheriting the techniques of Sozan Kaneshige, who could be called the father of modern Bizen hidaski, he creates a hidaski so appealing that one almost wants to eat it. The thick, rich hidaski complements the mugusa-colored clay, making even the stone grains within the surface of the vessel feel deeply flavorful. Featuring a highly challenging design rare for Koriki, the square foot has been fashioned into a split foot from three directions and further hollowed out into a circular shape. Signed wooden box (shihozan)
Diameter 6.5cm × Diameter 6.4cm × Height 7.1cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father, who loved pottery, he aspired to a career in ceramics. After graduating from high school, he studied under the father-and-son team of Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989 to learn the craft. After seven years of training, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to strike out on his own, and successfully produced his first firing the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Confectionery Bowls from the North I'd Like to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Exhibition of Chanoyu Forms" for the first time.
