Description

This is a Bizen sake cup by Takashi Baba, an artist born in Imbe who has loved Bizen ware since childhood and finds his life’s joy in creating works and firing kilns. The piece combines Baba’s signature rhythmic, delightful-to-behold aesthetic with a black slip finish. Having been thoroughly fired in an anagama wood-firing kiln, the black surface features gradations of metallic reddish-brown. While the piece is impressively large and bold, it is surprisingly lightweight and comfortable to hold, perfect for swirling your sake and enjoying it at a leisurely pace. Signed wooden box (double-crosspiece)
Approx. diameter 7.7cm × 7.5cm × height 6.9cm Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba. Determined from a young age to become a ceramic artist, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his artistic scope. After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he further honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture. He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition. Today, he is highly active, focusing primarily on solo exhibitions at department stores.
