Description

This Bizen sake cup is the work of Takashi Baba, who was born in Inbe and has loved Bizen ware since childhood, finding joy in crafting pieces and firing kilns. It is a bold piece that evokes the sensation of a freshly hewn chunk of cooled lava, featuring a magnificent "haikaburi" (ash-covered) aesthetic. The generous layers of ash have crystallized into shades of gray, creating a striking composition against the dark brown "nuke" (uncovered areas). The intense, rugged form, which perfectly complements the dramatic firing, is another highlight of this piece. Signed wooden box (double-slatted lid)
Diameter 6.2cm x 5.9cm x Height 6.6cm Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba. Intending to become a ceramic artist from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden the scope of his craft. After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he further honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture. He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition. Today, he is active primarily through solo exhibitions at major department stores.
