Description

This is a latest black sake cup from the kiln of Masao Akitani, a potter who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates works brimming with his own unique originality within a fresh spirit. As Akitani-sensei himself described this firing as a great success, it is a magnificent piece featuring deeply applied natural glaze and a glossy, profound black. The generous amount of natural glaze has transformed in places, appearing like cobalt blue or gold paint, and combined with the unrestrained, flowing glaze drips, it is packed with highlights that make it hard to know where to look first. The vertical incised lines have expanded as the clay swelled, creating an incredibly interesting texture. The bell pepper-like form, with its deep black finish, displays a brilliant cobalt blue that will surely become even more beautiful as it gets wet with sake during use.
