Description

This Bizen sake cup is by Yukio Tomori, who began his path in pottery in Okinawa and studied under Taisetsu Sueishi in Bizen. Fired in a kiln fueled by constant stoking, the piece features the generous, rich "sesame" ash glaze characteristic of Bizen ware. Mr. Tomori sought to capture the "most beautiful moment" as he continually transformed the clay on the wheel, resulting in a style that seems to freeze the dynamic movement of the clay in the kiln. The lively, dancing form of the cup feels as though it might keep expanding if touched, and it brings a sense of joy to the viewer. (*Please note: There is a significant kiln adhesion, which Mr. Tomori suggests you enjoy as part of the landscape of the piece.)

Diameter 7.9cm x Diameter 7.7cm x Height 5.9cm Yukio Tomori was born on Miyakojima Island, Okinawa. He aspired to become a potter after encountering wood-fired, unglazed pottery in Okinawa during his high school years. In 1984, he began his apprenticeship at Tsunami-yama Pottery in Okinawa. Later, while traveling through various pottery regions, he discovered and was deeply moved by Bizen ware, leading him to study under Taisetsu Sueishi for four years starting in 1987. He built his own anagama kiln in 1999 and became independent after his first firing. Since holding his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2001, he has held exhibitions in various locations, including Fukushima, Chiba, Osaka, Ehime, and Miyakojima.
