Description

This is a new colored Bizen sake cup by Anjin Abe, an artist who possesses deep insight and an aesthetic sense for antique ceramics, creating one-of-a-kind works through his unique research and firing techniques. It features a new coloring style with surging waves carved into the surface. The light blue of the crashing waves, the red of Mt. Fuji, and even shades of green emerge, creating a remarkably vibrant composition. Combined with the signature yellow sesame glaze (kigo-ma) of Bizen ware, the piece is incredibly lively yet comes together beautifully as a single, cohesive composition. (Please note in advance that the piece is slightly unstable and may wobble.) Original signed box to be provided at a later date (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 6.7cm × 5.9cm × Height 6.3cm Anjin Abe was originally a Western-style painter. After collecting ceramics as a hobby and feeling unsatisfied with contemporary Bizen ware, he began his own pottery practice in 1972 to create works that met his own high standards. He frequently creates water jars, flower vases, flattened jars, bowls, sake bottles, and sake cups, all of which are wheel-thrown and finished with a spatula. His approach to pottery is rooted in the antique Bizen ware of the Momoyama period, with a meticulous focus on the firing process. He also engages in diverse artistic activities, presenting mixed-media works that combine various materials and techniques, such as ceramics, lacquer, oil painting, and bronze. He holds solo exhibitions energetically both in Japan and abroad, including in Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and Paris.
