Kuro-uchi text plate

This is a black "Uchimon" (impressed pattern) plate by Koichiro Isezaki, an artist who was born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and is breathing new life into the world of Bizen ware with his extraordinary sense and masterful sculpting skills. This black plate is from the "Uchimon" series, which Koichiro has been focusing on recently. At last year's Japan Traditional Kogei Chugoku Branch Exhibition, he also submitted and won an award for a long plate featuring the same type of "Uchimon" pattern on both sides. The "Uchimon" design accentuates the sharp texture of the black finish, and true to Koichiro's talent, it allows the piece to subtly shine with individuality, even within the context of tableware where usability is paramount. In the coming season, plating colorful summer vegetables on this piece will surely make the ingredients stand out even more. Paper box

The Isezaki family is a prestigious name in Bizen ware; his grandfather was Intangible Cultural Property holder Yozan Isezaki, and his uncle was Intangible Cultural Property holder Mitsuru Isezaki, and Koichiro himself aspired to pottery from an early age. After graduating from the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States. He learned pottery for about two years under Jeff Shapiro, a ceramic artist based in New York City, which greatly broadened his perspective on art and pottery. After returning to Japan in 2000, he trained under his father's guidance alongside his father's other disciples. In 2002, he submitted a piece to the Tanabe Museum of Art Tea Ceremony Exhibition for the first time and was selected.
