Description

This is a new Bizen beer cup by Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, an artist who continues to lead the world of Bizen ware with an inexhaustible creative power. Freshly removed from the kiln this July, this latest piece features an exquisite balance of scarlet (hiiro), sesame glaze (goma), and fire-cord markings (hidaski). The sesame glaze on the back blends with the straw used for the hidaski to create a lightning-like effect, providing an intriguing contrast to the bold, vivid hidaski on the front. The interior reveals a beautiful scarlet hue, making it a delight to gaze at the texture of the clay after finishing your drink. (Please note in advance that there is some peeling of the matte sesame glaze on the rim.) Original signed box to follow (please allow some time for shipping).
Diameter 8.0cm x Diameter 7.3cm x Height 9.7cm Jun Isezaki was born as the second son of Yozan Isezaki, a master of ceramic craft. He learned pottery from a young age and began his career after graduating from the Special Art Course at Okayama University in 1959. His work covers a wide range, from traditional vases, plates, and tea ceremony utensils to ceramic walls and sculptures. In his production, he places great importance on both shaping and firing. He is known for a style overflowing with a contemporary sensibility that leverages the unique characteristics of his materials and kilns (anagama, climbing kilns, and electric kilns). He has also released numerous works as a leading artist in relief pottery. In 1966, he became a regular member of the Japan Kōgei Association. He served as a lecturer for the Special Art Course at Okayama University for nine years starting in 1978. In 1998, he and his brother, Mitsuru Isezaki, were both designated as Holders of Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and in the same year, he became the Secretary-General of the Chugoku Branch of the Japan Kōgei Association. In July 2004, he was designated as a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property).
