Description

This is a Bizen sake cup by Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, an artist whose peerless, "god-like" craftsmanship led to the creation of numerous masterpieces. Every detail from the rim to the foot has been meticulously formed, reflecting the thorough workmanship expected of a master often called a genius of the potter's wheel. The vibrant hues of the metallic glaze intertwine with the whites of the *sangiri* (kiln change) and *nuke* (clear patches), creating a refined aesthetic. Though slightly large, it is exceptionally comfortable to hold, and its classic form makes it a versatile piece suitable for any occasion. Original signed box (shiho-zan)
Diameter 6.7cm x 6.6cm x Height 5.7cm Toshu Yamamoto (1906–1994, born in Inbe, Bizen City) entered the world of pottery in 1921 and established his own kiln in 1933. He later studied under Kyoto ceramic artist Yaichi Kusube to further hone his skills. Following the war, he deepened his friendships with figures such as Rosanjin Kitaoji and Isamu Noguchi. Known as "Toshu of the Potter's Wheel," he was renowned for his exceptional wheel techniques and delicate creations; he actively focused on tea ceramics, particularly tea caddies (*cha-ire*), establishing his status as a master of the craft. He was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 1987. In 1992, he held the exhibition "Journey of the Six Old Kilns: Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto."
