Description

This is a raw clay tea bowl by Takao Kibata, who made his long-awaited debut after nine years of diligent training as a pupil of Jun Isezaki. The piece was created by taking a ball of clay, striking it to leave wrinkles on the surface, shaping it into a sphere, and then carving out the foot before paring away the outer circumference and hollowing it out. The serene beauty of the surfaces and the dynamic beauty of each line are masterfully integrated, resulting in a work with an incredibly impressive three-dimensional presence. The grey surface, lightly coated in ash glaze, combines with the raw clay—left largely unrefined and carbonized into a black-silver hue—to create a sophisticated, austere texture that perfectly complements the modern form.
