Description
This Bizen sake cup is by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired. Without using any machinery such as electric wheels or thermometers, the piece was fired in a primitive kiln based solely on the artist’s own empirical judgment. The clay was built up using the coil method rather than a potter's wheel, leaving a distinctive two-tiered interior that reflects a rustic, powerful, and authentic handmade aesthetic. The understated, refined texture of the clay, reminiscent of old Bizen ware, perfectly suits its form.
