Description

This is a Bizen sake cup by Sosu Kaneshige, the eldest son of the master potter Sozan Kaneshige, whose work captivates many with its harmony of delicate, elegant clay texture and powerful form. It features a well-balanced appearance of dry sesame (kase-goma) and yellow sesame (ki-goma) glaze; the refined yellow sesame, which promises to look beautiful with sake, is truly exceptional. The masculine foot, which identifies this as a piece by Sosu at a glance, is endlessly captivating to behold. Though devoid of flashiness, it possesses a romantic quality, much like a warrior covered in mud, fighting on the battlefield. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 10.1cm × Diameter 9.5cm × Height 3.5cm Sosu Kaneshige is the eldest son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University, he began his path in ceramics under his father in 1969. He became independent in 1979. Focusing primarily on tea ceramics created on a potter's wheel, his work is characterized by deep, rich firing. He strives to eliminate ornamentation as much as possible, focusing on channeling his soul directly into the clay. He rarely enters public exhibitions, preferring to focus his creative energy on solo exhibitions, which he holds energetically every year at department stores in Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany, and in 1997, he exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition.
