Description

This is a new Bizen black tea bowl by Takashi Baba, an artist born in Imbe who has loved Bizen ware since childhood and finds his life's joy in creating works and firing kilns. Reflective of Baba's signature style that bridges tradition and innovation, it features an orthodox form with tasteful design elements incorporated into the rim. The black finish is magnificent, with the area around the sesame glaze (goma) on the front and the foot rim showing a kiln-change (yohen) gradation that evokes hues of ultramarine. Intense yellow Bizen goma glaze is splashed over the deeply fired black body, forming droplets like molten gold flowing across a pitch-black surface. Furthermore, the generously applied yellow goma coats the interior of the bowl, resulting in an exceptionally smooth texture. Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 12.9cm x Diameter 12.8cm x Height 8.4cm Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba. Thinking from a young age that he would become a potter, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden the scope of his ceramic art. After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts sculpture department in 2006, he joined the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture to hone his craft. He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition. He is currently active primarily through solo exhibitions at department stores.
