Description
This Bizen teacup is by Takashi Soga, an artist who recreates the conditions under which ancient Bizen ware was fired to challenge the beauty of the past. Created without the use of any machinery such as electric potters' wheels or thermometers, these works are fired in a primitive kiln using only the artist's own empirical knowledge. The small, refined form, shaped using the coil-building technique, possesses a dignified presence, with a clay texture so evocative it seems as if it were modeled after the surface of an ancient Bizen jar. Every aspect of this piece conveys the care and patience invested in its creation, with no step in the clay-firing process rushed.
