Description

This is a brand new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln by Masao Akiya, who studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki and creates works brimming with unique originality within a modern aesthetic. By thinly shaving the surface with a spatula, he has created three-dimensional tiers that produce horizontal stripes perfectly matched to the form. To balance the strong horizontal impact of the shaping, he has wrapped thin, dark streaks of *hidasuki* (fire cord) vertically from the base. With generous *goma* (ash glaze) on the rim and the front, this piece is a coexistence of innovative design and rich firing.
