Description
This is a new *hakeme* (brushed slip) sake cup by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with an exceptional aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his approach to clay, firing, and craftsmanship. Inspired by the understated beauty of Joseon dynasty *hakeme* ware, this piece features a profound, nuanced glaze achieved through tireless research. The white slip, applied with a bundle of rice straw, has a wonderfully coarse texture, perfectly complementing a surface that has matured into an off-white hue, accentuated by the firing of the brush strokes, subtle irregularities, and bleeding iron deposits. The slip application inside the cup possesses a deliberate, unrefined quality that evokes a weathered aesthetic, stirring the spirit of *wabi-sabi* when filled with sake. It is a magnificent piece that favors a rustic white slip over a decorative white glaze.
