Description
This is a new *e-hakeme* (brushed slip) tea cup by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with a superb aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his handling of clay, firing, and craftsmanship. Slightly large and unpretentious in form, it possesses an elegant quality; while intended as a tea cup, it is also suitable for use as a *shochu* cup. He uses a brush made of bundled thin rice straw to apply the white slip, resulting in a thinly and unevenly applied finish that creates a weathered appearance, evoking a sense of *wabi-sabi*. The iron-brushed design, with brushwork reminiscent of Joseon-period Gyeryongsan ware, is magnificent, and the world of faded, weathered white tones makes for a stunning piece that resonates with the *wabi* spirit.
