Description

This new E-hakeme (brushed slip) teacup is by Yoshinobu Morimoto, an artist with a superb aesthetic sense who continues to evolve in his work with clay, firing, and form. Its slightly larger size and unpretentious construction give it a refined quality; while intended as a teacup, it can also be used as a shochu cup. He uses a bundle of thin rice straw as a brush for the white slip; the slip is applied thinly and unevenly, creating a very weathered appearance that evokes a sense of wabi-sabi. The iron-painted design, reminiscent of Joseon dynasty Gyeryongsan ware, features energetic brushwork that is truly magnificent. It is a stunning piece where the world of fading white porcelain deeply resonates with a spirit of wabi.
