Description

This is a new Bizen yohen sake flask by Yoshiteru Koriki, a popular young ceramic artist who was a live-in apprentice to the master Sozan Kaneshige. This piece was fired by being rolled in front of the kiln fire, resulting in a striking and impressive ash-covered landscape. The work features both ash coating and flowing sesame glaze; the latter, which has become transparent and amber-like, is a masterpiece. Amidst the intense scenery, the "nuke" (uncovered area) created by the rolling technique provides an excellent balance, and the pale gray clay body is beautifully accented by a golden sheen in the upper right that looks just like an aurora. Influenced by his father, who loved pottery, he set his heart on the path of ceramics. After graduating from high school in 1989, he studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and his son Yuho Kaneshige to learn the techniques of the craft. After seven years of training, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 and set out on his own, successfully firing his first kiln the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Confectionery Containers from the North," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Forms" for the first time.
