Colored Bizen Sake Cup

This is a new colored Bizen sake cup by Anjin Abe, an artist who possesses deep insight and an aesthetic sensibility toward antique pottery, creating one-of-a-kind works through his original research and firing techniques. A soft white reminiscent of light snow is combined with a pale wisteria color that expresses a world of falling fresh snow and a tranquil, cloudy sky, unveiling a new world of Mount Fuji in a snowy landscape. The gold and red border evokes a picture frame or the edge of a photograph, capturing this serene world of the snowy Fuji and elevating it to a more profound dimension. Following his Oribe exhibition, Mr. Abe’s signature firing technique has evolved even further; the Bizen surface is exquisite, retaining a meltingly soft quality despite being fired as hard as steel. Diameter 7.0cm × Diameter 6.5cm × Height 6.5cm Anjin Abe was originally a Western-style painter. While he collected pottery as a hobby, he felt a lack of satisfaction with contemporary Bizen ware and began ceramics in 1972 to create pieces that he could find truly convincing. He frequently creates water jars, flower vases, flattened jars, bowls, sake bottles, and sake cups. All pieces are wheel-thrown and finished with a spatula. He bases his pottery on the antique Bizen ware of the Momoyama period and is deeply committed to his firing techniques. He is also involved in diverse expressive activities, presenting works (mixed media) that combine various materials and techniques such as ceramics, lacquer, oil painting, and bronze. He holds solo exhibitions energetically both domestically and internationally, including in Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and Paris.
