Description

This is a Bizen kiln-transmutation (yohen) sake bottle by Makoto Nakamura, a renowned master of sake ware and tableware and the eldest son of the legendary Bizen potter, Rokuro Nakamura. True to its name, this bottle showcases a breathtaking, vivid scarlet "tsuchi-aji" (the flavor of the clay), drawing out the colors within the earth to their absolute limit. Despite achieving such a magnificent scarlet hue, the piece also beautifully expresses "haikaburi" (ash-covered) kiln-transmutation, with carbonized sesame-seed-like grains forming a coarse texture on the surface. While inheriting the flattened vase (henko) style of his father, Rokuro, Makoto has established his own unique balance, resulting in a shape that stands closer to a cube. Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Mouth: 3.9cm x Body: 11.1cm x Body: 10.8cm x Height: 10.2cm; Capacity: approx. 350cc Born the eldest son of Rokuro Nakamura, Makoto Nakamura began learning the foundations of pottery under his father in 1971, diligently honing his skills. To further his expertise in the firing techniques of Living National Treasure Toyo Kaneshige, he spent ten years assisting and receiving instruction from Michiaki Kaneshige during kiln firings. He became independent in 1975. He specializes in tea ceramics and tableware, while also creating flower vases, sake bottles, and sake cups. He holds frequent solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Okayama, Nagoya, and throughout Japan.
