Description

This is a new black-glazed sake cup by the popular young artist Yoshiteru Koriki, an inner disciple of the late master Sozan Kaneshige. Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Koriki has continued his research into glazed works, and this piece marks his first-ever creation using a black glaze. Crafted with the aesthetic of *wabi* in mind, the black glaze features fine ripples and indentations, giving it a glossy appearance like wet nori seaweed. It has been lightly kissed by ash during the wood-firing process in the climbing kiln, and the mustard-colored ash deposits serve to deepen the profound, understated quality of the black. The interior also features fine ripples in the glaze, with a generous dusting of ash that creates a unique, sensuous, scale-like glaze texture. The clay body is Bizen earth, showcasing the characteristic bright brown *tsuchiaji* (flavor of the clay). Signed wooden box to be provided later (please allow some time for shipment).
Diameter 7.2cm × Diameter 7.1cm × Height 5.1cm Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Influenced by his father’s love for ceramics, he pursued a career in pottery. After graduating from high school in 1989, he began a seven-year apprenticeship under the masters Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige to hone his craft. In 1996, he struck out on his own, building a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and successfully firing it for the first time the following year. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since. In 1999, his work was selected for the "Exhibition of Confectionery Containers I Want to Use," and in 2002, he was selected for the "Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition" for the first time.
