Description

This Bizen sake server was created by Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto, a master craftsman whose peerless, god-like skills resulted in numerous masterpieces. It is a rare work from his youth when he used the "Man" (万) potter's mark, and it possesses a delightful, refreshing quality derived from the high-quality rice paddy clay that has since become scarce. True to his reputation as a master of the potter's wheel, the unique, small jar-like form is remarkably refined and stylish. Although labeled as a sake server, its versatility allows for a variety of uses depending on your ingenuity. The finish is magnificent, showcasing the beauty of a simple, timeless earthiness, where the rich shiso-purple hue transitions to a bright brown, complemented by a crisp, yellow sesame glaze. (Please note that while there are almost no signs of use or dirt, this is a work from a previous era.) Signed and inscribed box by Yuichi (Shiho-san construction)
Diameter including spout and handle 9.4cm x Diameter 9.2cm x Height 9.5cm Toshu Yamamoto (1906–1994, born in Imbe, Bizen City) entered the world of pottery in 1921 and established his own kiln in 1933. He later refined his skills under the tutelage of Kyoto ceramic artist Yaichi Kusube. Following the war, he deepened his friendships with figures such as Rosanjin Kitaoji and Isamu Noguchi. Known as "Toshu of the Potter's Wheel" for his superior throwing technique, he produced delicate works and established his reputation as a master of tea ceramics, working enthusiastically on items such as tea caddies. He had a particular fondness for tea caddies, of which he produced many. He was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property) in 1987. In 1992, he held the exhibition "Journey of the Six Old Kilns: Living National Treasure Toshu Yamamoto."
