Description

This Bizen water jar (mizusashi) is from Yoshinobu Morimoto’s new exhibition. The series recreates the Momoyama period, when the wabi-cha world evolved from the use of "mitate" (repurposed objects) by tea masters into the production of authentic tea ceramics. This piece represents the quintessential Bizen water jar; the powerful, expansive *yahazu-guchi* (arrow-notch rim) and the dignified, solid construction of the body give it an overwhelming presence that makes it a stunning display piece on its own. After being built using the coil method, the potter’s wheel marks were left intact, and bold spatula marks were added to create a dynamic clay surface that can be enjoyed from various angles. The contrast between the *goma* (ash glaze) and *sangiri* (kiln-floor reduction) markings is also magnificent. (*Note: The matching lid is currently in production; the one shown in the photo is a sample.) Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 21.3cm x 19.7cm x Height 19.5cm
